The time will be advised a little closer to the event
In a fitting opening to the Eagles Men's 1998 SBL campaign, available members of the 1988 Wanneroo Wolves and East Perth Eagles mens' teams replayed that memorable game - the last Mens Grand Final victory for the Eagles
Boasting such illustrious names as David Ah Chee, Ned Coten, Dan Hunt, Bryn Jones, Ian Satie and Carl Gondor ( apologies to anyone whose name I have missed out ), the game was played in good spirit and at an intensity befitting the occasion and the age of the players
Eric 'Watto' Watterson, the current Wanneroo ( now Joondalup City ) Wolves Coach 'crossed the floor' for the evening to take the reigns of the club he served with distinction for so long in tandem with current Geraldton Buccs' 'main man' Dan Hunt, whilst Norm Majors, now back with his original W.A. team the Perth ( now Burswood ) Redbacks, returned to the Wanneroo bench for the evening
Rumour has it that the planned fully - timed game format was abandoned due to requests from the players - after all they are 10 years older than in 1988 !
One feature of the game, apart from the outstanding sportsmanship displayed by all, was the quality of the play. The match - up between David Ah Chee and Ian Satie being one example. Although played at a slower pace than the one between the Eagles and Senators current SBL squads that followed, these guys showed that they can still play the game !
Played before quite a reasonable crowd for a pre - season game, the Eagles ran out 5 - point winners on the night, to repeat the victory 10 years earlier, in a game that highlighted the spirit and cameraderie of the players and officials from both organisations
Our thanks go out to everyone involved in this special event, and in particular the organising committee, and the Wanneroo District Basketball Association for their enthusiastic co - operation
Special mention must also go to the referees for the night, Syd Stephens - who I believe officiated in the original game, and Lindsay Cox - who has admitted that he didn't.
Steve Morrison has been working extremely hard to get this association off the ground
